WORDS & FILM INTERVIEW by STEPHANIE MALIK

IMAGES & FILM by HARLEY WEIR

As part of a behind-the-scenes film for i-D Magazine, I interviewed Edward Meadham and Ben Kirchhoff, head designers of Meadham Kirchhoff, backstage at their larger-than-life runway show at London Fashion Week. In the unexpectedly insightful, and endlessly quotable, interview Barbie is considered a “weird cultural icon” on a par with “Coca-cola”, “God”, and “McDonalds”, while monsters are named alongside 70′s nightlife as a source of inspiration. Most surprising, however, was when it was revealed that this collection is in many ways a celebration of ideas that the reclusive designers themselves find utterly alienating. In the ultimate example of irony, we find that the creative minds behind this glitzy collection inspired by fun, extroversion, and nightlife are actually self-proclaimed loners, and, to be honest, pretty awkward (albeit endearingly so).

Unfortunately, due to various technical difficulties, the sound quality for the film was less than desirable, resulting in a final edit where ABBA’s “Dancing Queen” drowns out large sections of the interview. This was truly a shame as I think the majority of press coverage that Meadham Kirchhoff’s remarkable show has been receiving fails to penetrate its sparkly veneer. By electing to exclusively focusing on the sheer glamour of it all, the press seems to have to some extent obscured Meadham Kirchhoff’s artistic vision, or at least, to have only told half of the story. (Although, to be fair, all of that glitter was pretty distracting….)

Thus, in an attempt to rectify this situation, I’ve chosen to publish the write up, along with a transcript of my interview, here as an exclusive on I Think You’re Swell. You can also watch Harley & I’s film for i-D Magazine below, as well as see several of Harley’s amazing photos from backstage. Enjoy!

EXCLUSIVE BACKSTAGE INTERVIEW WITH MEADHAM KIRCHHOFF A/W 2012

The atmosphere was intense backstage in the final moments leading up to the spectacular debut of Meadham Kirchhoff’s A/W 2012 collection. With glitter strewn all over the floor, teeth being painted, and models dressed in everything from tinsel trousers to monster-faced coats, backstage was truly a spectacle in itself. Amidst all of the chaos it was no wonder that after the plan for prosthetic caps had to be abandoned at the last minute, Edward asked if anyone had any ibuprofen (it was decided that the prosthetics could not survive the scrutiny of the HD cameras).

Suddenly Ben, whom had up until that point had been largely quiet whilst pensively observing the goings-on, jumped up to deliver an impassioned speech to the models just before their final run through.

“It’s not a freak show. You look the way you do because you are beautiful, not because you are trying to be impressive freaks. It’s not about the audience thinking that you’re something that you’re not. It’s about you, and what we’re trying to make come through is your personality and your individuality.”

Profound words, ones which I think suffice to show that despite the fact that this collection is conceptually centered on the ideas of fun, glamour and nightlife, it would be a mistake to think Meadham Kirchhoff are anything less than sincere about their work.

In conversation Meadham Kirchhoff come across more like artists than stereotypical fashion designers, consistently speaking of their show as though it were purely a platform for expression, rather than a platform for advertising. Speaking to them about their show instinctively felt like a discussion of something closer to an art exhibition than an industry event. Meadham Kirchhoff do not simply stage theatrical shows, they curate an experience.

Even when discussing their collection, it is clear that their artistic vision is privileged over meeting any industry expectations.  “We’re not going to churn something out for the sake of it”, Ben commented, adding “it puts you through pains and stress and whatever else, but it has to be right.”

This sort of attitude on the part of contemporary fashion designers is as refreshing as it is rare. If there is anything the majority of shows at London Fashion Week this season made clear, it is that what has come with the economic downturn is that most designers (or at least those given shows at LFW) will ultimately cater to the best-paying customers– who at this point happen to be largely from the Middle East and China–and, moreover, will do so at whatever aesthetic sacrifice. (This discussion, however, warrants another article in itself, which I plan to write soon.)

In this fascinating interview, Meadham Kirchhoff reveal that their striking collection was not merely an exercise in extremes, nor an attempt to please the fashion industry, rather the collection was in many ways a testament to everything the designers take themselves not to be.

INTERVIEW

SM: So is your creative process more a result of looking at references or is it more a result of isolating yourself from trends?

Edward: “Both.”

Ben: “Yeah both.”

Edward: “I totally look at references.”

Ben: “We do not look at fashion at all.”

Edward: “I do not look at fashion, but I do look at references and I do isolate myself, and I think it comes from both.”

SM: For this season in particular were there any highlighted references for you?

Edward: “Trojan, Leigh Bowery, the Coquettes.”

Ben: “Roxy Music.”

Edward: “Monsters.”

Ben: “Nightlife.”

Edward: “The 70’s generally, glam, the idea of fun, the idea of nightlife…the idea of all of these things that I’ve never experienced really.”

SM: So it is supposed to be fun and humorous, but at the same time…

Edward: “Provocative. It’s supposed to be fun. I’ve kind of realized that my only way of being fun or charming or anything other than silent and alone–the only way I communicate that—is through the shows.”

SM: So do you view the shows as a chance to let everything out, like a cathartic experience and otherwise view yourselves as quite quiet?

Ben: “We’re not lonely, but we are loners.”

Edward: “Solitary.”

Ben: “Yes, solitary is a better word. I have a close knit group of friends that I like to see and I never really extend it very far, so the idea of being in a room full of people having fun, I don’t really know how to take part in, it’s very alien to me.”

Edward: “I just said to everyone else, the last five collections have been about everything that I am, and this collection was about everything that I am not.”

SM: What was the significance of the Barbie pins?

Edward: “Barbie had to be there somehow, she’s important.”

SM: Why is Barbie important?

Edward: “Why is Barbie important? Well in the way that any other weird cultural icon is, like Coca-cola or God or Madonna, McDonalds…it’s the same thing, no?”

Sup yall,

I haven’t really been around much as of late, been on my vacation steez, but I’m back and plan to post a lot like old times. blah, blah. I saw that Nicki Minaj debuted a new video so of course I had to watch it and see what all the hype was about. From the beginning I have been a Nicki fan, but for some reason or another my interest has waned. I like the video because it reminds me of some Hype Williams, ultra bright colors on a big ol’ booty, that’s pretty rad! Haha. But what kinda stinks is that I like the video more than the song. I would totally dance to this in a club, but that’s because I like to dance just in general.

Nicki is so crazy I swear, it’s hilarious. I bet this was a really fun video shoot. Her in a cage goin’ buck, shakin’ her ass and makin’ jokes, I can only imagine. I need to shoot behind the scenes photos on a video shoot for her one day, lol. Oh yeah, so throughout the first half of the video a quick flash of an “ass” keeps popping up so of course I needed to see if this was Nicki’s ass in the video…I posted it below.

yeah, bummer I know, it’s not her ass, it’s some kinda CGI booty that’s in the video. Haha. I wished that it was her ass, but then I realized that if she put her treasure trunk out there like that it’d make her a stupid hoe. And yeah, the video is below.

Masks by Jenny Ollikainen, Worn by Jenny Ollikainen and Diego Yanto. Indianapolis 2011.

This past weekend I was playing DJ at a friend’s bank holiday barbecue in London (“bank holiday”=long-weekends where everyone is off work in the UK), and once I got to being too lazy/drunk to DJ song-by-song anymore I put on one of Diego’s mixes. Everyone was really into it and asking about what it was, which got me thinking about how much I miss the old BEATSINFACE cassettes.

So today some friends and I somehow got a sick Diego [#awwww] to cook up a new mix in a matter of minutes, which has all sorts of loveliness from the likes of Salem, Clams Casino (one of my new faves) v. Jay-Z/Kanye West, Das Racist, Planningtorock, Holy Ghost, James Drake (yes Drake, not “Blake”) and SSION among others.

Full track list and download link below

Let me explain the lineage of the BEATSINFACE tapes, ’cause its about time their existence was documented.

While I think it is fair to say that my home-state of Indiana isn’t exactly renowned as a hotbed of cultural offerings, there have nonetheless been the occasional bright spots (perhaps you’ve heard of James Dean, Kurt Vonnegut, or Michael/Janet Jackson?).

However I think most people would be surprised at what you can unearth in Indy’s art/music scene if you dig a little bit. Because its such a small place, all of the best people tend to move between one or two venues in Indianapolis (and Bloomington), which leads to an unexpectedly high potency of talent. Maybe being isolated in a sea of cornfields lends itself to fostering some kind of creative purity…..?

I feel like it is almost an advantage for some of the local artists/musicians that they are at a distance from the dominant scenes in New York/LA/London etc etc. because at least creativity-wise they aren’t as tainted by these outside influences (although truth be told most of them tend to leave Indy eventually, including Diego who now lives in the Netherlands).

Anyway, one great example of Indiana’s non-suckage has always been my friend Diego’s coveted mixtapes. Originally the brainchild of Dustyn Logan Peterman, the cassettes, called BEATS IN FACE (a play-on Tim Sweeney’s well-known radio show Beats in Space ) were circulated amongst friends and friends of friends, and came complete with artwork containing the names of the bands on the tracklist (supposedly) embedded in it. [I always had trouble finding said tracklist, and this was before the days of Shazam or whatever its called, so basically I rarely had any clue what I was listening to, which was kind of awesome too.]

And damn guys these mixtapes were GOOD. Like damn good. Two tapes with sides A and B full was enough to get me through a road trip in 2007 from Zionsville, Indiana to Bristol, RI by way of Toledo, Philly, and NYC without getting bored/annoyed. Part of that was no doubt the diversity of music: somehow flowing seamlessly from, for example, the Gang Gang Dance to Chromeo to the Chromatics to some obscure hip hop and then an amazing italo-disco track where the only lyrics are “Dragon …uh huh….dragon….rawrrrr” (and don’t forget this was 2007).

To this day I maintain those mixes are better than any of the ones you get commissioned by music blogs, you know, where they get the guy from Neon Indian or whoever to mix their favorite songs. Too bad I have no digitized version of the tapes to prove this (People of Indy: does such a thing exist?!)

So anyway, I was lamenting to Diego on about how much I miss his mixes, and a few others joined in (proving the FB does have the capacity for good in it somewhere)..as it happens he was home sick and so just threw this mix together for all of us in less than an hour, maybe even less than 30 minutes… it was ridiculous.

So I thought I would share the joy with all of you (and cross my fingers that Diego won’t kill me for sharing something I know he won’t consider near polished enough to share with the general public as he “didn’t even have a DJ interface” on hand, so he ripped it with his index finger and some free virtual DJ software, which I think just makes it all that much more impressive).

I went to the opening of Todd Hido’s “Fragmented Narratives” at the Bruce Silverstein Gallery last night with my buddy Robert. We were looking for a different gallery, but this little dance with happenstance was a very fortunate one. The entire exhibition is absolutely beautiful — and mind-blowingly so. The place was packed and full of energy and even though there were free libations for all, there was no crowd around the table like there usually is — ALL eyes were on the work and everyone was talking about it. I love when that happens.

Summer Fiction comes as a glimmer of hope as the reality of long johns and chapped faces set in. The Philadelphia-based artist, Bill Ricchini, pulls from everything from the baroque pop of the late 60′s to country duets. It’s the kind of thing where you feel like you’ve heard it before but don’t mind listening a bit more. You can stream and download the full length self titled LP over at Summer Fiction’s bandcamp. And check out the video for Chandeliers below, which features scenes from Fists in the Pockets.

As you nerds know, I’m a big fan of screen capping movies and shit, so when I saw the “Love The Way You Lie” video like half an hour ago I felt “compelled”.

I am actually confused as to what the video means and how it’s supposed to be taken cause like, sure there’s “turmoil” and fires and shit, but like, it’s all sexy? I will admit that I am a fan of “sexy violence” and shit, but like, is Rihanna a fan too? — And if she is…like why’d she dump Chris? (Too far? Sorry)

Megan Fox and the dude from Lord of the Rings and X-Men, Dominic Monaghan play two confused lovers “whose passion turns violent as their relationship vacillates between ecstasy and agony.” (according to MTV.com; LOL, shut up, but +2 of the use of “vacillates”) Apparently the video portrays the relationship that Slim Shady had with his lady Kim. DUH, like aren’t they all? UGH. EMINEM…MOVE ON BUDDY. MOVE ON. AND STOP YELLING IN ALL OF YOUR SONGS…that shit s dumb played out.

Watch the video and read the captions I made for individual scenes.

If you’ve ever wondered what ass to mouth was all about, then you should definitely check out this flick. I was actually supposed to see this movie last night but I ended up not having time and my friend, Paul Iacono, of “The Hard Times of RJ Berger” had to head there without me. I need to see what he thought about the flick…

The movie is playing now at The IFC on 6th avenue and damn I’m so glad I saw it. Me and Mark were supposed to see the 5:25 showing but because of the shitty expensive service that the MTA provides, those plans were thwarted. Haha, we ended up walking to 7-11 and getting a slurpee, then to Lenny’s for a sandwich, then Jamba Juice for a drank, and then the bakery for a carrot cake cupcake. So bangin.  Well — the sandwiches were lackluster, both Mark and I both thought they could have been better for the amount of money they cost…

Anyway, the movie is mad fucked up and gross and damn hilarious! Haha. Like…you will cringe and also laugh your asses off in this flick. The acting of the two girls in the flick, Ashley C. Williams and Ashlynn Yennie, is quite horrible but it makes the movie all that much sweeter. Haha. These bitches remind me of the girls from Clueless…minus the fame and minus the “talent”. Haha. But I love them, seriously.

The things they say, reactions, and facial are pretty awesome and even while munching butts they still managed to “say” just as much.

The asian dude in the movie, Akihiro Kitamura, was pretty good too I guess. I mean, all he really did was yell in another language, but I mean it was convincing that he was NOT into what was happening…lol.

The surgeon and my favorite character, played by Dieter Laser (damn, his name is fuckin’ DIETER LASER; SO BADD ASS) is probably one of the most terrifying looking people I have ever seen in a movie. Like, darkness follows that motherfucker around. I’m on the L train now heading home and I’m getting chills.

His mannerisms and how stiffly he held his neck the entire movie is really quite disturbing. his jawline so sharp and his heart so cold. He looks like Christopher Walken, but like, I’m sure Mr. Walken is much too nice to sew anyone’s butt to another person’s mouth…I mean c’mon, he was in “Blast from the Past” — I love that movie.

One scene made me yell out loud and slightly jump outta my chair but almost every scene made me want to throw up most of the calories I had just consumed. (Skinny shit)

The audience was really into the movie too and after awhile we were all in unison for most of it. One girl was yelling survival tips to the “centipede” the whole movie; I found it to be quite comical.

The movie did have some rather well done parts to it…especially the lighting. There were a few scenes that reminded me of “Revolutionary Road”, in respect to the lighting that is.

Go see the movie. It’s definitely worth the $12.50 and it’s better than anything out right now playing at any major theater starring J.Lo or Jennifer Anniston.  Take a friend or two, it’s definitely a movie for friends.

I would advise you not to eat anything that might come up easily while sitting in the seat though…i.e. ice cream, creams of any kind, Indian food, etc.

if you haven’t seen the trailer, check it out below.

Tonight I watched Boyz in the Hood for the first time ever. I know what you’re all sayin’…”late to the party” haha, I swear it wasn’t my fault; my moms was trippin’. Anyway, the movie was fantastic, I mean wow! I can’t believe I am just now seeing this movie. It’s like when I heard that Cassie song, Me & You for the first time late last year and I thought it had just come out…so ridiculous. I’m mad late on this one. April 3rd, 2009

Today was an all together good day. I had a lot on my mind which I wont get into, but I managed to keep it all bottled up and enjoy myself. I woke up somewhat early and at first just shuffled around the apartment for a little…then I took a walk to Lorimer and Metropolitan to meetup with Kellogg. On the way there I snapped about a roll of film on my Yashica Electro 35 which I rarely ever get to use. I hung out at Kelloggs for a bit and shot a few pics of random stuff and then he decided he needed to go to the bank and make a deposit. I borrowed There will be Blood from him so that i would have something to watch at the house and also because I had never seen it, I know, it’s ridiculous it took this long. Oh did I mention that he had been poisoned by the “Chinese” a day or so earlier?!?! haha. Food poisoning must blow. Anyway…we walked there, laughing along the way and walking his awesome and friendly pit bull named Lola who decided it would be awesome to poop about 5 times during the walk. Haha. It made me laugh. As we got to be about 5 blocks from the bank Kellogg realizes that he had forgotten key elements that would aide him in this deposit making this trip a complete waste of time. YESSSSSSS! He is awesome. haha. So it was whatever..as we started to back track Lola decides that she wants to roll around in an oil slick, full body, face and all…haha! Kellogg is completely puzzled by this and tries to stop her but she cannot be moved! Needless to say, when she was done she was covered in oil soaked dust and looked as though she had been in a dog fight. People kept staring at us like we had a dog fighting rink and I couldn’t stop laughing! I took some photos with my Yashica and I plan to get the rolls developed this week to post here, just be patient. haha. It was getting close to the time for me to meetup with Sarah for some food so Kellogg and I went our separate ways..

I met up with Sarah and we got spanish/chinese food and watched There Will Be Blood together. Wowie. It is an immensely captivating and jaw dropping film, I must say it is one of the best films with some of the best acting I have ever seen. Daniel Day Lewis is so believable and Paul Dano (Little Miss Sunshine)  even more so. A few scenes left me completely speechless. I will probably watch this again this week. Oh man, chills. And did I mention that the soundtrack is just stellar? My god it’s great! My favorite track would have to be “Proven Lands” by Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead, it is just so engaging. I’ve listened to it quite a few times today already.  I have a few photo galleries to put up when I get to work so expect that tomorrow. I’m pooped so I’m going to bed now.

Nite nerds,
antwan.
