I went to Detroit & Ypsilanti for two weeks and took more photos than my iPhone’s 16 gb capacity could accomodate…and more than I was willing to upload to my instagram  and facebook too. Soo here they are. A buncha selfie’s, random Detroit ruin, friends, strangers, food, and yea, you get the picture — no pun, but no really though, I plan to just dump a ton of dope shit here. haha.

All the 35mm stuff will go on FORCESKIN.

I met Kevin Munoz during my time in Austin, Texas this past month. I was with Ian and we were looking for the wine that was at the opening, typical. Anyway, Kevin was there, we talked a little about random shit, crackin’ jokes and such and he gave me his card. I checked it out, liked it, and now here we are. I like his stuff and I think you will as well. Hire him for something.

^ Love this one! Would look so awesome on a totebag.

–Stephanie Malik

The other day my friend Ellen, who is an amazing video games reviewer (no, I’m not biased), showed me what has to be the most bizarre video game I have ever played. It is a free online flash game called I Made This. You Play This. We are Enemies and it is certainly the closest thing I’ve seen to something that blurs the line between video games and art. (A line that, in my opinion, is not that often particularly blurry…)

At first sight the aim of the game is simple enough… it seems the point is to move a ball through an incredibly basic maze to an end point using the arrow keys and the space bar. However, only a few minutes into playing one sees things get complicated/strange very quickly.

Even before the game is played, what is immediately striking is the sort of deliberately overwhelming, yet under-designed, low bit, user-unfriendly aesthetic (an aesthetic that is in general really trendy right now: the first thing I thought of when i saw the game’s layout was the website of the Golden Gate club in Berlin). The game’s layout is composed of a number of what look to be terribly collaged homepage screenshots from some of the largest websites in the world (Youtube, Google, Disney etc.) covered in a bunch of random MS-paint style scribbles. As the game is played, more and more moving parts come into the picture and how to proceed through the levels becomes increasingly obscure.

Each level also includes a few seemingly unrelated videos that pop up if you click the appropriate boxes (this was one of Ellen’s favorite parts of the game). Also, if you make it through the game’s 10 or so levels, there is a special set of videos at the end, one of which is about the death of the internet (??). From what I can glean, the videos explore similar themes to Ryan Trecartin’s films, e.g. hypermedia saturation, internet identity, post-consumerism (btw Trecartin’s films were recently exhibited at PS1 in New York City at one of the best exhibitions I have ever seen).

What I can’t figure out is if this is a completely brilliant piece of work by some video game art vanguard or a complete piece of pretentious garbage by some insane/creepy weirdo that probably still lives in his parents’ basement. Either way, it’s a game worth playing.

***UPDATE! This article managed to generate enough internet traffic that the artist behind the game, Jason Nelson, got in touch with me and has agreed to do a brief interview. Nelson also pointed me to a recent article in the Guardian where he is interviewed about art games. You can read it here: “Basquiat meets Mario Brothers? Digital poet Jason Nelson on the meaning of art games“. Stay tuned!

So far this week has been somewhat of a fucking nightmare. My job has been stressful as hell, I’m still tired as shit from raging so hard during SXSW (so worth it), and I’m getting fat (as hell, but I think I’m still happy, I think).

IMG_0009

Sighs. Complaining is so easy, damn, it sucks. Haha. Anyway, here’s some shit I’m into this week.

DEATH FROM ABOVE 1979

1. Death From Above 1979. Again, DEATH FROM ABOVE 1979! I don’t remember the last time I was  this stoked about a band performing. Actually I do remember, it was when I got to see Bright Eyes perform for the first time AND when I got to see Erykah Badu perform at Good Units…talk about some heavenly experiences. OH SHIT and don’t let me forget Cam’ron’s album release party — on that HOOD shit. Haha. Sorry for the tangent, back to DFA1979. The show was fucking bananas, I have the sickest polaroids from it, which I ‘ll be scanning soon…and also, I photographed it for Interview Magazine. That night was a dream come true. Kids tore down the fences surrounding the venue to get in, cops came atop horseback and corralled em (like sheep, lmao) and then they tased and maced em, awful. Ha, I was pined to the front of the stage by the rushing crowd all the while screaming the lyrics at the top of my lungs. i’m getting chills just thinking about it. Sebastien has some fucking pipes on him and Jesse can rip the hell out of a guitar.

See more of the coverage I did on Interview Magazine!

2. I like the fact that the lil baby on the cover of Biggie’s album was found. Haha. I unno, I’m not really a Biggie fan or anything, but I think that this is a heartwarming lil’ tidbit goin’ on in the news…sadly, the dude only got $150.00 for it — LOL. Ni99a got hosed! I mean, I guess it’s pretty obvious his momma wasn’t a businesswoman like my girl Cadillac Kimberly. Lol. Damn I love that ho. haha. <3

3. I don’t know how this small obsession started but I’m really feeling all things studded now. Ha. At SXSW I studded a pair of Converse, then I spent an hour and a half studding another pair while taking pictures and chillin’ in the gifting suite. The only problem I see with studding things/wearing studded things is that it attracts attention and TALKERS! Random ass people come up to me now, more so than ever and just wanna talk about my fuckin’ shoes. It’s like, no they weren’t expensive, no I’m not famous and NO this does not mean I’m in a band. Lol, they’re just shoes folks, keep it movin’.

IMG_9436

IMG_9440

Oh you mad cuz I’m STYLIN’ ON YOU!

———————

polaroid_supercolor_600

4. I love polaroid cameras, everyone knows this, but there is just something about the original polaroid camera (I consider the polaroid 600 to be the original) that i just love. The boxy shape, the way the film pops out, everything. While thirsting with Ian (yeah we’re hipsters) in Austin we cam across a pack of film and a polaroid camera — each worked, WOOT! We took photos of one another with it and then later that night I shot images of DFA1979 with it. In love with it now, like the way a momma loves a baby. Weird, but only God can judge me. :)

I don’t particularly remember how I came across the work of talented U.K. born photographer Stephen Gill, but I’m sure as hell glad I did. Though all of the work in the his portfolio is interesting and truly intriguing, the work in his series called “Outside In” is what really left me speechless.

In 1992 before the grand opening of the original House of Blues the venue hosted a Thanksgiving Day dinner for a group of homeless people. The venue was co-founded by Dan Aykroyd and Isaac Tigrett and River Phoenix was one of their first investors. Random as hell, I know, but I unno, it’s kinda a cool Thanksgiving spirit story. Ha.

So this is just gonna be a post of images of River Phoenix and Dan Aykroyd.

silk

Silk is an R&B group who reached the peak of their popularity in the early and late 90s. Known mostly for their “sexy” bedroom loving anthems, Silk has has always been a favorite of mine. Today in fact I listened to my favorite track by Silk titled, “Meeting in My Bedroom” at least 9 to 10 times…no exaggeration. I can remember the first time I heard the song in fact; I was sleeping over at a friends house and we were trying to sneak and watch some random porno tape his older brother had and this track was on it..LOL, I don’t really remember much about the the porn since I’m sure we were just laughing our asses off BUT i definitely never forgot about the track that helped the “actors” make such sweet love. Ha.

Anyway, check out the video to “Meeting in My Bedroom” if you’ve never seen it/heard the song and if you like it, download it (below) and play it the next time you’re gettin’ nasty witcho girl or guy.

I don’t care how old or when this track came out — “She Thirsty” is still a jam! Holy crap, I mean, play this song and tell me you don’t want to just start dancing in a dark club with some random chick…I’m talkin’ bout that grown n sexy type dancin’ — GRINDING!!! And lemme tell you, chicks (who know how to dance and shake their “bottoms”) go nutzo for this song! Damn son! The bass, the beat, the overall simplicity of the song — sighs. So good, dumb good, ghetto good, don’t make no sense good.

A definition to the term “thirsty” might help some of you better understand the song…

LARA-STONE

This is by far one of the most beautiful covers I have seen in a long long time. I mean, I’ve always respected Vogue Paris (and all the other ones) because they are always more geared toward art than commerce — in my opinion. I mean, I know that Conde Nast is just a machine, but like, somehow all of the other VOGUE’s find a way to hold onto their artistic credibility, unlike American VOGUE, which will just use some random “actress”… Like, look at teh American VOGUE cover for October…

carey-mulligan-vogue-october-2010-cover-05

“?????”

wtf is that? sure I think Carey is beautiful and interesting looking, but this is the cover? UGHHHH. No comparision with these two covers and like that’s how it always is.. Damn. Carey Mulligan is too cute for this cover to not be straight bangin! And like, cut it with all the dumb text on the cover, can we just see the image?! Fuck.

Look at her on the cover of WONDERLAND…such a striking image..

CareyMulliganWonderland

This shit is so annoying. The whole thing of commerce before art is so disappointing and it’s so obvious when it happens.

The other day I decided to watch BOONDOCKS for the first time in years. I ended up watching an episode called, “Stinkmeaner 3: The Hateocracy” [season 3, episode 5]  and it was all about these three geezers who had come to the town to beat the grandfather and all the kids’ asses cuz the grandfather killed some dude a long time ago named Stinkmeaner. LOL. This episode was dumb outta control and muhfuckas were gettin there ass beat left and right. Anyway, the family ended up hiring some random ass karate black dude to protect them and he was bougie ass hell and ended up fighting “Charlie Murphy”. Whatever whatever, point being, Charlie Murphy looks just like this bitch and it’s funny as hell.

Lol, now, look at his head shape/teeth/body type and tell me it’s not the same person! LMFAO! Dyin’.

Capture1

I mean, he do look kinda good in a dress though…Haha. And dem’ pearls do suit him since he such a gentlewoman. ;)

Cha-lay-mer-faaaaayyyyy!!!! NOOOOOO!!!!!

Hiya guys. It’s Jaycee, finally out of the woodworks. Between working, studying and interning I hardly have time to post, or sleep for that matter. But I always have time for a burrito and a party :)

Me and the homies had a chill day, hitting up Boloco. Never heard of it? It’s like Boston’s version of Chipotle except way more environmentally friendly. Minus the environmental part I prefer Chipotle

2010-08-09-19.39.50

So then day turns to night and my boy Julian wants to go out. Only one problem I am not in possession of an ID. Buttttt evidently I remind the bouncer of some random black celebrity with short hair (Halle, Rihanna, insert name here) and he lets me in. In the words of Wiz Khalifa “straight through front door, don’t got ID, straight up the elevator to the VIP”

this is LOL on so many levels. haha. this is a picture from the night Switch of Major Lazer played the Girls & Boys party at Webster Hall. Haha. I love to see intense grinding like this, it’s hilarious! Haha, I love that one can tell that the girl “wants it” just by reading her body language, haha, just look at her! Haha, she is in no way planning to put up a fight; She even seems to bind her own hands beneath her body as her man and/or random dude proceeds to grind on her…while she ‘s on the filthy club floor…or is that the stage? Haha, GLORIOUS. And ha, I love that the dude get even more “shine” with this photo, haha, throwin’ up dueces and stuff for the camera while he is still on the girl.

Sighs, I love grinding.

Haha, LOL on so many levels. Love it.

hmm, it’s 2010. a whole new year, this intrigues me. 2009 was a great year, it was fun, i saw & did a lot of things i never imagined i would be able to…but one thing that was missing in 2009 and for a few years now has been a “relationship”… i feel like in this new year i need to make a conscious effort to change this…but i’m not exactly sure what i have been doing wrong in the first place…

is it that i’m too funny when i meet girls? that i make them so comfortable around me that they immediately view me as a “bff”? that’s annoying, cuz like, sure i’ve been waiting til’ marriage to “fuck”, but like, “Bitch, can i get in yo’ GUTS?!” sounds harsh, i know, but like, what the hell.

it’s like, yeah, yeah, dancing at that club was so fun and yeah grinding to ‘salt n pepa’ was great…but uhh, did you not feel that “umph, coming thru; on YOU” …cuz if you didn’t let’s try this again and this time PAY ATTENTION.
