Masks by Jenny Ollikainen, Worn by Jenny Ollikainen and Diego Yanto. Indianapolis 2011.

This past weekend I was playing DJ at a friend’s bank holiday barbecue in London (“bank holiday”=long-weekends where everyone is off work in the UK), and once I got to being too lazy/drunk to DJ song-by-song anymore I put on one of Diego’s mixes. Everyone was really into it and asking about what it was, which got me thinking about how much I miss the old BEATSINFACE cassettes.

So today some friends and I somehow got a sick Diego [#awwww] to cook up a new mix in a matter of minutes, which has all sorts of loveliness from the likes of Salem, Clams Casino (one of my new faves) v. Jay-Z/Kanye West, Das Racist, Planningtorock, Holy Ghost, James Drake (yes Drake, not “Blake”) and SSION among others.

Full track list and download link below

Let me explain the lineage of the BEATSINFACE tapes, ’cause its about time their existence was documented.

While I think it is fair to say that my home-state of Indiana isn’t exactly renowned as a hotbed of cultural offerings, there have nonetheless been the occasional bright spots (perhaps you’ve heard of James Dean, Kurt Vonnegut, or Michael/Janet Jackson?).

However I think most people would be surprised at what you can unearth in Indy’s art/music scene if you dig a little bit. Because its such a small place, all of the best people tend to move between one or two venues in Indianapolis (and Bloomington), which leads to an unexpectedly high potency of talent. Maybe being isolated in a sea of cornfields lends itself to fostering some kind of creative purity…..?

I feel like it is almost an advantage for some of the local artists/musicians that they are at a distance from the dominant scenes in New York/LA/London etc etc. because at least creativity-wise they aren’t as tainted by these outside influences (although truth be told most of them tend to leave Indy eventually, including Diego who now lives in the Netherlands).

Anyway, one great example of Indiana’s non-suckage has always been my friend Diego’s coveted mixtapes. Originally the brainchild of Dustyn Logan Peterman, the cassettes, called BEATS IN FACE (a play-on Tim Sweeney’s well-known radio show Beats in Space ) were circulated amongst friends and friends of friends, and came complete with artwork containing the names of the bands on the tracklist (supposedly) embedded in it. [I always had trouble finding said tracklist, and this was before the days of Shazam or whatever its called, so basically I rarely had any clue what I was listening to, which was kind of awesome too.]

And damn guys these mixtapes were GOOD. Like damn good. Two tapes with sides A and B full was enough to get me through a road trip in 2007 from Zionsville, Indiana to Bristol, RI by way of Toledo, Philly, and NYC without getting bored/annoyed. Part of that was no doubt the diversity of music: somehow flowing seamlessly from, for example, the Gang Gang Dance to Chromeo to the Chromatics to some obscure hip hop and then an amazing italo-disco track where the only lyrics are “Dragon …uh huh….dragon….rawrrrr” (and don’t forget this was 2007).

To this day I maintain those mixes are better than any of the ones you get commissioned by music blogs, you know, where they get the guy from Neon Indian or whoever to mix their favorite songs. Too bad I have no digitized version of the tapes to prove this (People of Indy: does such a thing exist?!)

So anyway, I was lamenting to Diego on about how much I miss his mixes, and a few others joined in (proving the FB does have the capacity for good in it somewhere)..as it happens he was home sick and so just threw this mix together for all of us in less than an hour, maybe even less than 30 minutes… it was ridiculous.

So I thought I would share the joy with all of you (and cross my fingers that Diego won’t kill me for sharing something I know he won’t consider near polished enough to share with the general public as he “didn’t even have a DJ interface” on hand, so he ripped it with his index finger and some free virtual DJ software, which I think just makes it all that much more impressive).

Tonight I watched Boyz in the Hood for the first time ever. I know what you’re all sayin’…”late to the party” haha, I swear it wasn’t my fault; my moms was trippin’. Anyway, the movie was fantastic, I mean wow! I can’t believe I am just now seeing this movie. It’s like when I heard that Cassie song, Me & You for the first time late last year and I thought it had just come out…so ridiculous. I’m mad late on this one. The scenes, the character development, the actors, the soundtrack, DAAAAAAMN; this movie is literally the whole package… Read the rest of this entry »

This song is pretty catchy and it’s nice to see that she still has some bangin’ ass moves.
Haha, what do you guys think about it? I like that there’s a little Michael in there too,
I hope she’s coping well…

I liked it. It was not nearly as corny as I expected. Every now and then I like to watch a good “thriller” with a good cast of characters. Samuel L. Jackson does a good job in the role of out of control cop, not the first time I know, and Patrick Wilson plays his role as the nice guy with the subtle voice as no one else can.

Haha. I always love Patrick Wilson in movies.
Anyway, even better than him in movies is Kerry Washington. Oh man, oh man, is she beautiful..and not to mention talented..

I love her voice and I love her facial expressions, mad convincing.

Did I mention that she was stunning… GUHH.

I saw this video just a little while ago and oh man, it made me feel sick to my stomach. Joe Jackson is a monster, not a scary monster that hides in the closet to scare children, no, but a monster that hides in the closet to scare his own children and sell them off to the highest bidder. This video shows what most people already believed after seeing the Jackson 5 movie so long ago. He’s a devil, a conniving jackal and someone needs to call him on it. That press conference was so selfish..too think I thought only Gary Coleman had parents that would literally leave him out to dry for a quick buck…psh, this motherfucker held a fuckin’ press conference.

Somebody in the audience, a reporter, a passerby, someone…should have run up and PUNCHED HIM IN THE FUCKING MOUTH while he was up there talking all that bullshit. I mean, right in the fuckin’ mouth; people can be such assholes.

knock yourself the hell out.

So terrible. Just so terrible.

So I just read that Micheal Jackson was rushed to the hospital by ambulance after he was believed to have suffered from a heart attack in his Los Angeles home…this is awful.

A family member was quoted as stating that Michael was in pretty bad shape. Oh gosh, I hope the king of pop is alright. Please.

A degree in Physics?? F-that, I am going to Liverpool to seize a Beatles degree.

After that, I  might just take a road trip to London to see Michael Jackson’s Comback.

“These will be my final shows … performances in London. When I say this is it, I mean this is it. I’ll be performing the songs my fans want to hear. This is it, this is really it, this is the final curtain call.”

Nonetheless, the weekend is coming up! so here is a track for you to listen to.

ive been playing soccer since as long as i can remember and feel that at the moment that i have achieved everything that i wanted to with the sport, so i wanted to try something else out starting this semester. this lead me to start doing track (especially since usian bolt was an inspiration over the summer and maybe cause living in flatbush had something to do with it, but mostly cause i wanted to run in some puma’s!). nevertheless, this past weekend i was able to attend the new balance invitational at the armoy..

basically every college you can name was there, and apparently it was the biggest meet of the year as well as being a big deal since Texas A&M was there cause they were the best or whateva (i had no idea since i didnt know le shit, this was all coming from coach). i had to take time adapting to my new place, i didnt know if people tried intimidating each other or what not, then the short ass shorts, putting the spikes in, etc. whats great about track is that you do not have to beat your opponent to actually win, as long as you gradually improve as a runner with every meet it is considered a “win” for you, or that was the impression i had. it’s an aspect of the sport that, for me at least, is very compelling.

I titled this blog post this because tonight I watched the UFC fight for the first time tonight.I have to admit that this is really not my cup of tea, but after while I started to enjoy it? I dunno, it’s weird. I don’t like fighting and blood and shit at all, but somehow I actually got into it. The rules really suck, because Rampage Jackson definitely should have won in my opinion but Forest did because of his silly soft kicks. Haha. Again, I know nothing about fighting, haha. For once, something I have no explanation for. I watched the event in East New York at my good friend Mel Honore’s house (band member of up and coming band Pora! Pora!) and I actually had a good time. I had never been to East New York and it was truly an experience. Hahaha. Abe, also a band member of Pora! Pora!, was so into the fight that he wanted to actually fight afterward, it was hilarious. I took a few photos with my camera phone. haha. I’m a cornball, I know. Now we’re heading to a party (random) and I plan to have fun.

So this week/weekend has been pretty awesome. Thursday I hosted my usual Unstoppable Perfect Party at Happy Ending and had a lot of fun! Friday I hosted an epic party with the Sweatshop Labor nerds at Savalas and man oh man, everyone came out. The place packed! Packed. I danced really hard and took mad photos and really just enjoyed myself. The place didn’t even clear out til about 4:40! It was insane. I got to dance with Elaan of elaanisvital.com and that is a rare occasion nowadays seeing as we are both always shooting for something. Oh and my friend Kristen from Florida, but went to NYU but has transferred to UPenn was there too and I’m like in love with her now. Oh man.

Right now (1:30pm) I’m on NJTransit heading back to NY after a night stay/bday party at my friend Jess’ house for mutual friend and my former love interest Bryanna. I went down to Jackson, NJ with my long time best friend Jean-Paule or JP and his friend from school Sebastien. We had such a good time. Wowie Zowie it was great. Haha. I invited Mike Carter and he invited Jay Staggers and man, it was just crazy seeing all these faces I hadn’t seen in years. Wow, someone just farted on the bus. Damn. That smells so terrible, like meat that’s been sitting out or something.  Anyway…It was funny seeing peoples reactions to my recent dramatic weight loss too. Haha. JP’s mom didn’t recognize me at all. I took so many and have so much to look through. Haha. Its gunna be grueling. And when I get off the bus I have to head straight home and charge my camera for about an hour just to head to mccarren pool and shoot pictures there. Just a lot going on..

All the photos will be up this week.

I’m pooped nerds,

Antwan.
