The Creatures of Comfort SS14 NYFW presentation last Sunday afternoon was a daydream at a desolate rocky seaside. As soon as I walked in, my attention turned toward the hand-dyed fabrics that draped the walls of the Maritime Hotel‘s patio. The strategically stacked rocks, cutouts of jetties, cool breeze and sunshine streaming down from the glass ceiling completed the coastal vibe.
The clothes were provocatively calming–a mix of textured silhouettes, clogs and clean lines, topped with over-sized, pointy straw hats that were reminiscent of Jodorowsky’s Holy Mountain. The casual forward-thinking elegance that fills the racks at their Nolita boutique effortlessly transferred over to the collection. Socks and sandals never looked so good!
The show closed playing ‘My Little Corner of the World’ by Anita Bryant–Creative Director Jade Lai stepped out from behind the dyed drapes and sweetly bowed to her audience. To be invited into Lai’s world was a pleasure and I’m sure I’m not the only one looking forward to what she will share with us in the future.
